Spoke with Mary Camarata

I sent Mary and email regarding Kyle's kindergarten report. I promised her that I would keep in touch with the boys progress. Here is the exchange we had via email:

Hi Mary and Dr. C,

Just thought I would update you on Kyle's progress. We saw you on Saturday, March 15, 2008. We are still having some "redirection" and "lack of focus" issues but they are really minor. His kindergarten teacher is wonderful and sees his strengths. You and Dr. C were absolutely right about the next step would be to watch out for comments related to ADD. His speech teacher mentioned that Kyle had some attention issues and maybe we need to test him for attention. Well, that is not going to happen. He will be retested in February for his speech. I am not worried about that at all. Here are the comments that his kindergarten teacher wrote up for me at our meeting this week.

From Mary:

Wow. I love this kind of message first thing in the morning. And, I must tell you, I laughed out loud to myself when I read the reason for "nostar". Hooray!

It is not unexpected that the teacher or others may interpret Kyle's relatively immature (to his other skills) auditory ability for anattention problem. Behaviorally (meaning behavior responses that one observes) auditory immaturity and attention deficit can look similar insome ways. One differentiating factor is that Kyle is capable of attending for good periods of time. What the teacher is seeing is that when auditory means alone are used to direct Kyle, repetition and/or "showing" as well as telling is required. This is expected given Kyle's developing profile. This will not always be the case. For now pair visuals (showing, text, pointing out, etc...) with auditory to the fullest extent possible. Your teacher sounds wonderful. If you discuss this interpretation over with her I am confident that she will pick up on it quickly. I am so pleased he is having such a wonderful year and making so much great progress. Fabulous! I also appreciate the update. Keep us in the loop, and keep up all the good work. Please pass my admiration along to the teacher as well, if you would. Thanks for this bright spot.

Sincerely, Mary Camarata.
Taking my boys to see them was the best decision we ever made. They didn't just give us a report and then say goodbye. They want us to keep in touch and call whenever we have any questions. I will be continuing to do that with them if and when needed.

Can't tell ya how much this means to me.

Everything the Camaratas told us to expect has come true.
Best decision we ever made, too.

Thanks for posting this.
I really need to write them.
We've got a big meeting on Monday, and I think it could be the last. He's almost halfway through the second grade now, and the Camaratas predicted Jack would be all caught up by third grade.
Fingers crossed.
If it goes as well as I think, we might end up cracking a bottle of something.

I know I am slacking here but I was wondering how your meeting went?

Seeing the C's was the best thing we ever did. They didn't just give us a report and we go our merry way, they gave us a direction and I have emailed Mary already many times and she has responded.

They have been spot on with both the boys until now. I will be forever grateful to them.

I am now 100% sure that I am going to make my blog public so I can hopefully help others like you helped me. I guess I was being a bit selfish for a bit.

If you know anyone that you think might like to read it or have access to this blog until I can get it public, just let me know.

Looking forward to see how the meeting went!
